Our Land, Our Coal!: Protesters Use Gandhi As Inspiration For Coal Satyagraha

 

A historic coal satyagraha, that draws inspiration from Mahtama Gandhi's salt satyagraha, has been running in the remote areas of Pelma, Chhattisgarh since 2011. The locals say the government wants to forcibly take away their lands on which their forefathers cultivated crops and is the only source of their livelihood.

The area of Gare Pelma holds millions of tonnes of coal reserves and many coal mining companies have been actively bidding for the reserves.
